Gorby earns first win at Midway behind Daugherty's career night

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - Just days removed from a gut-wrenching loss at the buzzer, the Midway women's basketball team seemed on the verge on experiencing some unwanted deja vu against Taylor (Ind.) Wednesday night.

Up 15 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Eagles, who took a 70-69 lead with 0.3 seconds to play only to fall on a layup as time expired against Brewton-Parker Saturday, saw their lead drop to all the way to 78-76 with just over two minutes remaining. And though the moment seemed to be overwhelming her team, Kylee Gorby says she felt that difficult loss had made her club uniquely prepared for the challenge in front of them.

"I said there was going to be a game (you'd be challenged again), Gorby said. "I didn't know it was going to be the very next game, but I said you're going to finish it out."

Her faith was justified. Jaiden Douthit hit a jump shot to stop the bleeding with 1:46 to play, kick-starting a 5-0 run that earned Gorby her first win as Midway's coach by the final of 83-76.

Afterwards, Eagles players said they had a similar mindset to their coach, as they were eager to erase the taste of Saturday's tough loss.

"We said on the way home (Saturday), the next one's a win," junior guard Kassidy Daugherty said. "It was by any means... that Wednesday night, we're getting a win, no matter what happens."

Daugherty did more than enough to ensure Midway would be victorious, finishing the night with a career-high 29 points, with 22 coming in the second half.

She was most potent in the third quarter, where she scored 16 points while making all four of her 3-point attempts, lifting the Eagles to a 69-54 lead. Daugherty was 6-of-9 from 3-point range on the night and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Douthit was in double figures as well with 12 points. Sereniti Webb scored all nine of her points in the second half while distributing a game-high five assists.

The 5-0 run to end the fourth quarter was a steady trend on Wednesday, as the Eagles also had a 9-0 run to end the first quarter and a 12-5 surge to close out the second. The second-unit also played a big role, with Midway's bench out-scoring Taylor's 27-5.

Though happy with her first win at the school, Gorby said she was most pleased knowing that Wednesday would build confidence in a new-look team still trying to put it all together while facing a difficult early schedule.

"I guess it's always a relief," she said. "But (I tell them) you're a winner, I'm a winner, we were not placed here to fail. So trusting that we know we're giving our best effort every day, we're going hard in practice we're adjusting, we're listening the coaches are constantly making adjustments and just having that faith."

Plenty of challenges still await Midway, which returns to the court Saturday for an exhibition road game against NCAA Division-I opponent Morehead State at 2 p.m.
