Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - While 2023-24 is still very young, the Midway women's basketball team has already sustained enough buzzer-beating losses to last several seasons.
For the second time in a 14-day stretch, the Eagles lost as time expired, this time falling on a Taylor Guess layup at the horn in a 65-64 home defeat to in-state foe Lindsey Wilson on Saturday.
To make the loss sting even more, postgame footage made it appear as if the ball was still in Guess' hand when the clock hit 0:00. But the shot was ruled good on the floor and the Eagles were left with the same feeling they had on Nov. 14, when they fell 71-70 on a buzzer-beater against Brewton-Parker (Ga.).
In a fourth quarter that saw the teams combine for just 19 points, Midway fell behind 63-58 after missing its first eight field goal attempts in the period.
But things finally appeared to be going the Eagles' way, as Atlantis White hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, both off of Jaiden Douthit assists, to turn that deficit into a 64-63 lead with just over a minute remaining.
After the team's traded stops, Guess missed a layup with five seconds to play, only for the Blue Raiders to retain possession off a jump ball. Following a timeout, Midway's Trinity Johnson deflected the in-bounds pass, but the ball found its way to Guess, who got into the paint and was eventually rewarded the go-ahead layup.
Days after scoring a career-best 20 points, Jermyra Christian was excellent again, finishing with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Sereniti Webb added 10 points and seven rebounds, with Douthit tying for the game lead with six assists.
The 2-5 Eagles now have four days to recover before opening River States Conference play on the road against Oakland City at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Oakland City was projected to finish second in the league standings in a preseason poll.
