Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Balanced scoring, dominant rebounding and a second-straight Sereniti Webb double-double sent the Midway women's basketball team into winter break with a win, as the Eagles jumped out to a big lead and held off a late Huntington (Ind.) rally to earn an 83-74 non-conference win Tuesday.
The Eagles held the Foresters to just 30 percent shooting in the first half, building up a 17-point lead in the process.
Things wouldn't be as easy in the second half, as Huntington found a rhythm from the outside, hitting eight 3-pointers in the final two quarters. Gabi Melby scored 18 of her game-high 25 points in the second half and following her 3 with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter, Midway's lead shrunk all the way down to 63-58.
But the Eagles were able to counter every Forester rally, and when Webb converted her double-double clinching rebound into a 3-point play, she all but iced the game as it pushed the lead to 79-69 with just 2:10 remaining.
Four days after setting career-highs with 32 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to St. Mary of the Woods, Webb had 16 points and 11 rebounds Tuesday. It was her third double-double of the season and the fourth of her career.
She had plenty of help on both ends of the floor. Jaiden Douthit had a team-high 17 points while also grabbing eight rebounds. Jermyra Christian scored 16, and she and Alyssa Hitch each had seven rebounds, as Midway finished the day with a 48-31 edge on the glass.
Christian dished out a team-high four assists as well for the Eagles, who defeated Huntington for the third consecutive year while improving their record to 5-8. Midway also held a 24-8 edge in second-unit scoring, with Kassidy Daugherty and Bree Howard both contributing nine points off the bench.
Midway is now off for the holidays, but will return to action at home on Dec. 30 in a 1 p.m. tipoff against Grace (Ind.)
