Eagles outlast upset-minded Pioneers, advance to RSC Tournament Semifinals

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- After earning one of the two No. 1 seeds in the River States Conference Tournament, the Midway women's basketball team began their postseason march on Wednesday when they hosted Point Park (Pa.) for their quarterfinal matchup.

Midway would take an eight-point lead at intermission, only to see the Pioneers storm back and take a one-point advantage in the third. The Eagles would eventually pull away late in the third and in the fourth for the 76-66 victory inside Marshall Gymnasium.

With the win, Midway extends their winning streak to 11, improving to 22-7 on the year as they now advance to Saturday's semifinal, where they'll welcome Alice Lloyd (Ky.) inside Marshall Gymnasium. Point Park, meanwhile, sees their season end at 11-16 overall.

It was a tough night for the Midway offense as they shot just 35.9 percent from the floor, but their effort on the defense helped keep the Pioneers in check. The Eagles held the visitors to 37.5 percent for the game forcing 22 turnovers.

The opening frame was a back-and-forth battle with three ties and four lead changes. Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) played some of her best basketball of the season, nearly registering a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor.

Midway – who took a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes of play – saw their lead dwindle to one after Point Park opened the second on a quick 4-0 run. The Pioneers stayed within one until Midway closed the half on a 10-3 as they would take a 37-29 into the locker room.

The Pioneers – who stayed within striking distance throughout the first half – would soon take a slim one-point lead in the third quarter. The visitors embarked on an 11-3 run as they would take a 41-40 lead with just over five minutes left in the quarter.

The Eagles immediately answered, getting a three-point play from Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) and a triple from Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) as they regained a 46-41 advantage. Point Park got within one, but Adams scored four straight points, and Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) nailed a corner trey as Midway took a 53-47 lead into the final stanza.

Dezeree White started to take over in the fourth, scoring four straight points to help Midway push its lead to double figures, 58-47, less than two minutes into the quarter. White would eventually score 10 points in the quarter as the Eagles held a comfortable advantage throughout before hanging on for the 76-66 victory.

Dezeree White – who hit 9-of-13 at the free throw line – would finish with 25 points to go with her seven rebounds. Semaj Adams notched one of her best performances of the season with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Aleigha Mucker, meanwhile, added 15 points in the win.

Tipoff for Saturday's semifinal between Midway and Alice Lloyd is set for 3 p.m. ET. The Blue and Gold won the lone regular season meeting, 65-62, on Jan. 28 in Marshall Gymnasium.
