Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a three-set loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) earlier in the week, the Midway men's volleyball team returned to action on Thursday when they welcomed Thomas More (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium for their home finale of the 2023 campaign.
Trailing 1-0, the Eagles leveled the match after winning the second set, but the Saints stormed back winning the third and fourth sets to clinch the 3-1 victory (25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 25-18).
Following the loss, Midway drops to 6-10 overall and 0-8 in Mid-South Conference play, while Thomas More improves to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in league play with the win.
The Saints came out firing on all cylinders to open the match as they turned a .414 hitting mark into a 25-20 opening set victory.
After posting just a .043 hitting clip in the opening frame, the Eagles bounced back in the second where they notched a .227 attacking percentage. They trailed 17-15, but a 5-0 run sparked by two service aces from Colton March (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the Eagles a 20-17 lead.
Thomas More cut the deficit to 22-20, but back-to-back kills by Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) and Jai'Den Chinnis (Upland, Calif.) followed by a kill from Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) gave Midway the 25-20 win in the second set to even the match at a set apiece.
Unfortunately for the home squad, the visitors sprinted to a 14-4 lead in the third set and a 10-4 lead in the fourth as they clinched the 3-1 victory after winning the final two sets.
Bazzo led the offensive attack with a match-high 15 kills in the loss. Chinnis and Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) added eight and seven kills, respectively, as they each registered a .357 hitting percentage.
Cogo dished out 30 assists and carded four digs, while Marsh led the defensive effort with six digs. Both Cogo and Marsh tied the team-high with two service aces apiece.
The Eagles are set to return to action on Tuesday (March 21) when they travel to Campbellsville (Ky.). First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET.
