Box Score BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- After taking two out of three from Rio Grande (Ohio) over the weekend, the Midway baseball team returned to action on Tuesday when they played Union (Ky.) in a non-conference game.
Midway scored six runs, but their defense committed five errors, allowing six unearned runs as the home team cruised to the 12-6 victory.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 15-13 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 18-9-1.
Union struck first and sprinted to a 7-0 lead after putting up a six-spot in the third. Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) singled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth, but the home team pushed their lead to double digits at 11-1 after scoring three in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Facing a run-rule defeat, the Eagles kept the game alive after scoring four runs on four hits in the top half of the seventh. Nichols had an RBI double, and Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.) laced a two-run double to right center before Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) cut the deficit to 11-5 with an RBI single.
Following a Union solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles plated a run in the top of the eighth. Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) led off the inning with a walk and then Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) doubled to right field, driving in Phillips.
Skyler Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) was handed the loss allowing one earned run in his two innings on the mound. Joshua Robinson (Jamestown, Ohio) and Josh Plasencia (Orlando, Fla.) each tossed two innings and allowed one earned run, while Ryan Lee Hayes (Lebanon, Ky.) allowed one run in his innings. Meanwhile, John Davis (Princeton, Ky.) tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the loss.
At the plate, Halterman, Nichols, and Taylor all had muti-hit games while Taylor also drove in a pair of runs.
Midway is set to return to River States Conference play on Thursday, March 30, when they host IU Kokomo (Ind.) for a doubleheader at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
