Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After opening conference play the previous weekend, the Midway baseball team stepped out of league play on Wednesday when they welcomed Mid-South Conference foe Thomas More (Ky.) to Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
The Eagles plated three runs in the first and fifth innings while their pitching staff tossed a combined shutout from their six arms en route to the 6-0 victory.
With the win, Luther Bramblett's squad moves to within one game of being .500 at 8-9 overall, while the Saints fall to 10-9 following the loss.
The Blue and Gold struck first, putting up a three spot in the first frame. Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) reached on a leadoff walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.).
Following the sacrifice fly, the inning continued after Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) reached on a two-out error. Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) then reached on a walk before Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) ripped a two-run double scoring Halterman and Nichols.
The Midway offense was then held scoreless for the next three innings, but they went right back to work in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits.
Davis walked to open the inning, and after swiping second, he scored on an RBI single by Halterman. Halterman then scored on an RBI double by Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.), who later scored on an RBI single by Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) making the score 6-0.
The six-run cushion was more than enough for Midway's six arms who combined for a complete game shutout. Gus Garrison (Cynthiana, Ky.) – who last recorded a win in 2019 – got the start and picked up his first victory of the season. The southpaw tossed three innings and scattered three hits with a pair of punchouts.
Josh Plasencia (Orlando, Fla.) pitched two innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts, while Ryan Lee Hayes (Lebanon, Ky.) and Grant Stone (Lexington, Ky.) each fanned three in their one inning of work on the bump.
Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.) tossed a perfect frame in the eighth before Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) notched two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth to clinch the 6-0 victory.
Following a day off on Thursday, the Eagles will entertain Ohio Christian for a three-game River States Conference series beginning on Friday with a nine-inning affair at 2 p.m. ET.
