Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Career days by Bree Howard and Jermyra Christian and a great fourth quarter comeback weren't enough for the Midway women's basketball team, as Ohio Christian hit its free throws late to top the Eagles 82-73 Saturday.
While Trailblazer guard Haley Cox, who entered the day the second-leading scorer in the NAIA, made an impact with 20 points, Midway's biggest challenge came from Emma Koons, who finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds.
The game seemed to be firmly in OCU's control, as a pair of Cox free throws with 5:28 to play put the Blazers ahead 74-59.
But the Eagles, who have struggled in the fourth quarter for much of the season, put together a rally, one kick-started by a 5-0 run by Sereniti Webb. Webb finished the day with 19 points and 12 rebounds, her fourth double-double in the last seven games.
The Blazers extended the lead back to 12 before Midway went on an 8-0 rally to make it 76-72 with 1:46 to go.
Howard and Christian accounted for all eight points during the run to highlight the best games each had in a Midway uniform. Howard finished with a career-high 19 points while Christian had 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. The seven assists are the most by any Midway player this season.
But eventually, the Trailblazers were able to work their way to the foul line, where they were virtually automatic all day. Ohio Christian shot 22-of-23 as a team, with Koons and Cox combining to go a perfect 20-for-20.
Three-point shooting also proved to be a major difference in the outcome. The Blazers went 12-of-29 from behind the arc while the Eagles were just 5-of-23.
The loss drops Midway to 7-11 overall and 3-5 in the River States Conference. Ohio Christian improves to 12-4, 4-2.
The Eagles get a week off before returning home to face Indiana Southeast at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
