Eagle softball team wins opening thriller, earns road split with No. 21 Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. - Midway softball coach Krystal Cammuse said she tried to make her preseason scheduled as difficult as possible so her players could come away feeling they "can compete with the best out there."

With how Friday's opener against 21st-ranked Reinhardt played out, the Eagles shouldn't be lacking confidence going forward.

Down 3-0 entering the seventh inning, Midway rallied to tie the game on a Ryann Berger home run, then won it on a two-run Kyra McCall double in the eighth, pulling off the 5-3 upset. Midway then raced out to a 3-1 lead in game two only for Reinhardt to score five unanswered runs to earn the split in a 6-3 final.

MIDWAY 5, REINHARDT 3

Shutout through six innings, the Eagles finally cracked the scoreboard in the seventh without registering a hit, as a hit batter and error set up an RBI sacrifice bunt by Ashley Ward, making it 3-1 with two outs. Then, on the first pitch of the ensuing at-bat, Berger turned on a Whitney Shepherd pitch, getting just enough to send the ball over the left field wall to tie the game.

After Makayla McDowell worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, the offense struck again. Following a single by Sydney Apling and double by Tenley Gilbert, McCall doubled into the gap in left-center, her shot falling just in front of the glove of outfielder Taylor Wade for the game's winning runs.

Reinhard would then put a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth only for McDowell to work out of trouble, forcing a Kalyn Jinks fly out to end the game.

REINHARDT 6, MIDWAY 3

Gilbert carried her team's momentum over into game two with an RBI single in the first inning, before Berger and Katie Rhodes scored runs in the fifth inning to give Midway a 3-1 lead.

Unfortunately, their Eagle counterparts would provide the late-game heroics this time, tying the score in the fifth and pulling ahead 4-3 on a Wade sacrifice fly in the sixth. Reinhardt then put the game away on an Emily Loveless two-run double and Jill Martinet RBI single, both of which came with two outs.

Kennadi Thompson had two hits with Rhodes scoring two runs for the 1-1 Eagles, who stay in Georgia for a Saturday doubleheader against Brenau. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
