Softball splits second RSC doubleheader in two days

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway overcame a late-game collapse in game one and a slow start in game two to make it out of a River States Conference softball doubleheader with a split against IUPUC (Ind.) on Monday.

The Eagles surrendered six runs over the Crimson Pride's final two at-bats in an 8-6 loss in the opener, but rebounded by scoring six unanswered runs of their own to win the second game 6-2.

GAME ONE

Ahead 3-2 with two outs, the Eagles were just one strike away from escaping the sixth inning with their lead in tact. But a great at-bat by Allison Frost resulted in a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.

That immediately gave way to a go-ahead two-run single by Taylor Poling. And following an error in the sixth an a pair of RBI doubles in the seventh, the Eagles entered their last at-bat trailing 8-3.

They didn't go away quietly, as an error and a sacrifice fly by Carly Jones trimmed the lead to 8-5. Then, with two outs, Sawyer Snodgrass delivered an RBI double that brought the tying run to the plate.

And though ensuing batter Payton Baum did make good contact, her fly ball ultimately landed in the glove of centerfielder Taylor Hundley for the final out.

Tenley Gilbert was excellent in the loss, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Ryann Berger and Katie Rhodes also had two hits for the Eagles.

GAME TWO

Crimson Pride bats stayed hot to open game two as IUPUC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But that would be all Midway starter Alexia Hoskins would allow, as her best collegiate performance resulted in her first collegiate win.

Entering the day with six strikeouts over 19.2 career innings, the sophomore equaled that total on Monday, even recording five straight outs via strikeout between the fourth a sixth innings. She allowed just five hits over her complete-game performance, with just three over the last six innings.

She wasn't the only Eagle to have a career day as Sidney Hudnall and Payton Baum each had the first two RBIs of their college careers.

The duo was responsible for giving Midway its first lead with clutch two-out hits, Hudnall on a two-run single in the second inning, Baum on a go-ahead single in the third to make it 3-2.

Baum added a second RBI single in the fifth, which was sandwiched between a pair of RBIs by Kennadi Thompson.

The Eagles are 4-10 overall and 2-2 in the RSC. They have two conference road series ahead this weekend, starting with a doubleheader at Oakland City (Ind.) Friday.

Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m.
