Men's volleyball falls to Wabash despite several season-best statistical performances

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - Multiple Midway players had their best statistical outputs of the season, but the Eagles were unable to find enough consistency to get over the hump in a 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 loss to Wabash (Ind.) in a Wednesday morning men's volleyball matchup at Marshall Gymnasium.

The Eagles accumulated an excellent .333 hitting percentage in the second set and took control with a 4-0 run that gave them a 15-11 lead. The Little Giants were able to get within 24-23, only for Colton Marsh to tie the match at one set apiece with a clinching kill.

After Midway took an 11-10 lead in a back-and-forth third set, Wabash turned things back in its favor with a 6-1 run. Down 23-18, Midway made things interesting, scoring four of the next five, highlighted by a Jonathan McGuyer kill and Steven Tippenhauer ace.

That was as far as comeback effort would go, though, with the set ending on a kill by Bawibawi Thang.

Set four followed a similar script early, with the Eagles rallying from an early deficit to take a 10-9 lead. But they would not be able to counter again, as the Little Giants pulled away behind a .500 fourth-set hitting percentage.

Setter Daniel Cogo had his best passing output of the season, dishing out 39 assists. That's the most Cogo's had since recording 54 in a five-set match against Rio Grande (Ohio) on March 2 of last year.

He helped Marsh (13), McGuyer (10) and Jai'Den Chinnis (10) all record double-digit kills on the day. Marsh and McGuyer both had their season highs, with Chinnis tying his previous top output.

Midway's 45 kills were its most all season, topping the previous best of 36 set in a Feb. 10 win against Kentucky State.

Jose Conde added 14 digs, one off his previous season high.

The 2-12 Eagles will return to conference action next Tuesday when they host Mid-South Conference opponent Campbellsville at 5 p.m.
