Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Moments after earning the 700th win of his career Tuesday, Midway baseball coach Luther Bramblett was in a self-deprecating mood.
"It means I'm old," Bramblett jokingly said of the milestone following his team's 8-1 win over Kentucky State.
There is, of course, more to the story, and Bramblett, who has won 168 games at Midway after previously winning 532 in 15 seasons at St. Catharine College (Ky.), was happy to share the moment with the people who've been along on the ride with him.
"Coaches don't get wins by themselves," he said. "They get wins with good players, good assistant coaches and administrators and people supporting the program. I've been fortunate to be at two places (where I've had) an opportunity to win and compete."
Following the win -- in which Eli Glasscock, Josh Halterman and Nick Eastham all drove in two runs and five pitchers combined for nine strikeouts while allowing six hits and no earned runs -- Bramblett shared a handshake and embrace with everyone on an Eagle roster that seems to be peaking at the right time.
After struggling through a 13-game losing streak earlier in the year, the Eagles closed the regular season by going 8-2 in their last 10 games, and seem to have a great deal of momentum as they prepare to face Ohio Christian in the opening round of the River States Conference Tournament later this week.
And having brought back the bulk of a roster that won a regular season conference title last year, Bramblett believes he is going into the playoffs with a dangerous team.
"We still have a lot to play for and we are capable of competing with anybody," he said. "We are playing pretty good baseball right now. If we continue to do that, we've got (just) as good an opportunity as anybody to win the thing."
Weather permitting, the best-of-three play in series with Ohio Christian at Midway will open with a single game at 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday. All postseason games will be nine innings long.
