Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ind. - After a few recent sluggish efforts at the plate, the Midway softball team finally started clicking in the second game of a doubleheader at IUPUC (Ind.) Wednesday, and clinched a spot in the River States Conference Tournament in the process.
After suffering a 3-0 shutout in the opener, the Eagles jumped out to a quick lead and never let up in a 10-3 win in game two.
Kennadi Thompson, who had two of Midway's five hits in the first game, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second, and started the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning. She also had a two-run single in the fifth that put the Eagles ahead 7-0.
The Crimson Pride tried to make things interesting by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth, only for Midway to respond with three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Payton Baum also had three hits and drove in the seventh's first run with a single. She the closed the scoring by coming home on a double steal, with an RBI Katie Rhodes single sandwiched in between.
Baum, Kyra McCall, Carly Jones and Sydney Apling all scored twice for the Eagles, who are now 17-23 overall and 15-15 in the RSC heading into their regular season finale against Indiana Southeast at home on Saturday.
The first game of a scheduled doubleheader will be at 1 p.m. In between the two games, Midway will host a senior day celebration.
