Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ind. – A pair of great pitching performances from Jackson Lee and Dylan Burton and some timely hitting helped the Midway baseball squad complete the series sweep of IUPUC after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader in Columbus, Indiana.
Lee pitched 7.1 scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory in the opener, while Burton followed with six shutout innings in a 2-0 victory in the nightcap to complete the three-game sweep.
Midway, who snapped their 13-game losing streak on Friday, has now won three straight, improving to 15-21 overall and 7-11 in league play.
Game 1: Midway 6, IUPUC 0
Midway jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following a Shane Taylor sacrifice fly. They added another in the fourth on a run scoring balk before Nick Eastham ripped a two-run single in the fifth to push the lead to 4-0.
The run support would be more than enough for Jackson Lee, who recorded the longest outing of his Midway career en route to picking up his first victory in a Midway uniform. The junior pitched into the eighth inning before being pulled following a one-out walk.
Lee would finish with seven strikeouts while scattering two hits over his 7.1 shutout innings. Lefthander Cade McKee would enter the game and get the final five outs to clinch the 6-0 victory.
The Eagles scored two more in the ninth after Taylor picked up his second hit of the game with a two-run double. Taylor and Eastham each finished with two hits, while Britten Robinson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Game 2: Midway 2, IUPUC 0
The nightcap had the early workings of a pitching duel between Dylan Burton and Casper Clark who took their turns throwing up scoreless innings. That trend would continue until the fourth when Midway finally broke through.
Jonathan Watson got the rally started with a one out single bringing Zane Patton to the dish. The junior from Georgetown, Ky. couldn't have picked a better time to hit the first home run of his career. Patton turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving his team a 2-0 lead.
As was the case in the opener, the offense was more than enough for Burton. The junior righthander would finish with seven strikeouts, allowing four hits over his six-shutout inning.
Burton would be pulled to begin the seventh inning for closer Jesse Komoroski. The junior from Memphis, Tenn. allowed a hit, but closed the door on his fourth save of the season.
UP NEXT: The series sweep moved Midway into fourth place in the River States Conference West Division setting up a pivotal three-game series with Brescia (Ky.) next weekend at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
