Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles drop high-scoring WBB affair to UNOH

LIMA, Ohio - Despite a record-setting number of shot attempts, the Midway women's basketball team couldn't get enough to find the bottom of the basket in a tight 97-91 loss to a good Northwestern Ohio team on Thursday.

In a game that saw nine double-digit scorers, the Eagles grabbed the momentum with a 7-0 run in the second quarter, giving them a 33-26 lead following a Jermyra Christian 3-point play.

But that would give way to a 21-6 Racer run to end the half, with 11 of those points coming from Alyssa Lawson.

Entering the night second in the NAIA in scoring at 25.4 points per-game, Lawson went above her average with 28 and helped UNOH build a lead that got as high as 14 in the third quarter.

Despite giving up the most points it has in a non-exhibition game all season, the Midway defense was still able to play a big role in getting the Eagles back in the game.

The NAIA's sixth-best turnover-forcing defense had 23 more takeaways Thursday, including eight in the fourth quarter. This helped the Eagles cut the deficit as close as 72-68 on an A'Lyrica Hughes jumper with 7:05 to play.

Then, after UNOH went back up by nine with just over a minute remaining, Morgan Cross and Aleah Arlinghaus scored layups just seven seconds apart, Arlinghaus' coming off her own steal, to make it 93-88.

The lead would dip to 95-91 off a Jacie Chesser free throw with 17 seconds remaining, but UNOH was finally able to break Midway's press, draining 11 seconds off the clock before Kayla Larimore hit two free throws to end the game.

Despite the 91-point scoring effort, the Eagles needed 97 field goal attempts to get there. This was the most shots taken by Midway since at least 2003-04, the earliest year statistical team data was available online.

The biggest struggles came from 3-point range, where the Eagles were just 3-of-28 for the game and 0-for-6 in the fourth quarter. This helped UNOH center Lori Huffman pull down a monstrous 22 rebounds.

For the second time in four games, Cross led the Midway offense, finishing with a career-high 18 points and six assists while also pulling down five rebounds.

Chesser, Christian and Hughes all contributed 17 points with Chesser grabbing a team-best six rebounds. Alexys Moore added nine points and led all players with four steals.

Now 6-3, Midway will return home for a pair of games before its Christmas break, starting with a 1 p.m. matchup against in-state foe Alice Lloyd on Tuesday. The two teams previously played in Pippa Passes on Nov. 15, a game Midway won 96-80.
