BEREA, Ky. - Already a multi-event record-holder at Midway, sophomore
Trinity Gottler can now add national qualifier to the already impressive resume she's put together in her track and field career.
Gottler secured a spot at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in javelin Saturday while also winning the event with a throw of 40.46 meters to help Midway finish second overall at the 16-team Landon Bond Classic.
The Eagles took first in four events to score 91.5 points. They came in narrowly behind the 99 of host Berea and well ahead of the 70.5 scored by third-place Thomas More.
Gottler, who also set a program javelin record Saturday, qualified for the national 'B' standard, eclipsing the required distance of 40.34.
She is the second Midway field athlete to qualify for nationals in as many weeks, joining
Emerson VanScoy, who hit a national standard in
high jump at the Pioneer Invitational on March 22. Â
VanScoy got another high jump win on Saturday, at 1.60 meters.
It was part of another excellent field day for the Eagles who also had the top-two finishers in pole vault.
Maddi Reed was first at 3.35 meters while
Makayla Brooks was second at 3.05.
Emilee Cecil had a standout day in sprints, winning the 100-meter race in 12.87 seconds, then placing second in the 200 in 26.56.
The 4x100 meter relay team of
Sarah Baker,
Kashlynn Rice,
Machaiah Poynter and
Brianna Trigg took second in a time of 51.70.
Rice was also top-four in a pair of hurdle events, taking third in the 100 (16.76) and fourth in the 400 (1:17.05).
Reed (100 hurdles, 17.41) and
Trinity Smith (1,500, 5:03.83) had fourth-place showings as well for Midway, which will be in Louisville for the Jim Vargo Bellarmine Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
