MARION, Ind. - After winning a combined four titles at the River States Conference Outdoor Championships, the Midway trio of
Maddi Reed,
Trinity Gottler and
Emerson VanScoy get to conclude their excellent seasons at the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
While all three are making their outdoor debuts, only Gottler is competing at nationals for the first time, as Reed and VanScoy both took part in the 2025 Indoor National Championships, with varying results.Â
Here's a look ahead for the three field event standouts before the 2025 Outdoor Championships, which begin in Marion, Ind. on May 21.
COMPETITOR: Maddi Reed
EVENT: Pole vault (Wednesday, 12 p.m.)
PRE-MEET SEEDING: 17th of 24
Reed says she "definitely was not happy" with a disappointing showing at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in March. An 'A' standard qualifier, she was sick when she arrived at the national site in Gainesville, Fla. and says she never felt right the entire trip.
Her frustration picked up when competition started. After clearing her first jump at 3.45 meters, Reed's body cleared her second at 3.60 as well, only for her momentum to carry her pole forward too far and knock the bar down. She then had two more tries to clear at 3.60, but was unable to do so, finishing in 16th place.
But after a great day at the River States Conference Outdoor Championships,
where she won while hitting a national 'B' standard height of 3.66, the freshman standout says she hopes to hit at least hit a new personal record of 3.76, before adding "but I am aiming higher."
REED QUOTE: "I don't want to say an exact height (I hope to hit) because I don't know what the heights are going to be and I don't want to take away from the enjoyment of it while I'm jumping. I definitely think I'm way more prepared for outdoor nationals because I know a little bit what it's going to be like."
COMPETITOR: Trinity Gottler
EVENT: Javelin (Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.)
PRE-MEET SEEDING: 25th of 26
Fresh off a freshman season in which she broke Midway outdoor records in four throwing events, Gottler found even greater success in a virtually new event as a sophomore.
Outside of a few small competitions in high school, Gottler entered 2025 as an almost complete novice in javelin and says she hasn't put all that much time and energy into the event this spring.
But that hasn't stopped her from having great success, with the highlight coming
at the Landon Bond Classic in March, where she hit a national qualifying 'B' standard with a throw of 40.34. She also won a conference championship in the event last month and now gets to take on the best throwers in the country.
GOTTLER QUOTE:Â "It's probably my first full year throwing (javelin). We (didn't) really practice throwing it all the year before and we hardly practiced it this year. But I'm hoping to at least place (at nationals). I'm excited for it."
COMPETITOR: Emerson VanScoy
EVENT: High jump (Friday, 2 p.m.)
PRE-MEET SEEDING: 20th of 34
Gottler's surprise ascension in javelin has been mirrored by VanScoy, who's primary focus coming into the year was pole vault. That changed at the RSC Indoor Championships, where she not only earned a win in high jump, but
qualified for Indoor Nationals, where she eventually
placed 13th at 1.60.
She wasted no time building on that momentum,
hitting the 'B' standard of 1.67 in the first outdoor meet of the season. That was her first of five high jump wins during the outdoor campaign, the last coming
at the River States Conference Championships.
VanScoy, who was also the RSC outdoor champion in long jump, now turns her attention to a new national environment, saying she's more confident and less intimidated by the field.
VANSCOY QUOTE: "(The national tournament is) as big of a deal as you make it. For indoor, I was naive a little bit. "I was like 'I'm here, I only hit the B standard.' I didn't think I was going to do well. Now, for outdoor, I know I can do this."
