VanScoy earns top-10 high jump finish at Outdoor National Championships

MARION, Ind. - A season of major progress ended in great fashion at the NAIA Outdoor Women's Track and Field Championships for Emerson VanScoy Friday.

The Midway sophomore cleared two bars, narrowly missing an All-American finish in the high jump with a 10th-place height of 1.66 meters.

VanScoy actually hit the same height as Isabelle Aaiders of Cumberland (Tenn.), who finished eighth to secure the final All-American spot. Aiders ultimately got the spot by hitting 1.66 on her first try, while VanScoy needed two.

"I am very proud of my performance," VanScoy said. "I would have loved to (make All-American) but it wasn't in the cards. But super proud of the performance. Top-10 isn't bad."

The sophomore from Teays Valley, W.Va. cleared both 1.61 and 1.66 on her second attempts, narrowly missing the program-record, 1.67-meter height she hit at the Pioneer Invitational earlier this season.

It was the second national appearance of the season for VanScoy, who placed 13th with a height of 1.60 in the same event at the Indoor Championships in February.

Disappointed by only clearing one bar at indoor, VanScoy says she got further motivation Friday by a field that was far more skilled than what she normally sees.

"(The competition at nationals) is 10 times more intense," she said. "It can either hurt you or better you and I think today it helped me."

She's only expecting better things in the coming seasons.

"I'm hoping for a few more bars," VanScoy said. "Maybe 1.75 (meters), something that I can do."

VanScoy was joined at the Outdoor National Championships by teammates Trinity Gottler (javelin) and Maddi Reed (pole vault), who competed on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

This marked the first time the Midway women's track and field program had three national qualifiers in the same season.
