LEXINGTON, Ky. - After waiting to hit a national high jump standard until the final meet of the indoor season,
Emerson VanScoy elected not to be so dramatic to start the outdoor campaign.
VanScoy clinched her spot at the NAIA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships, hitting the qualifying 'B' standard while taking first and setting a program high jump record, highlighting an excellent opening meet for the Midway women's team at the Pioneer Invitational, hosted by Transy on Saturday.
High jump was one of five events won by the Eagles, who also took second in three.
VanScoy topped out at 1.67 meters, coming in ahead of Transy's Taylor Roark, the runner-up at 1.55. The 'B' standard is 1.66 while the 'A' qualifier is 1.69.
This is the best mark of the career for VanScoy, who topped out at 1.60 meters at both the
River States and
NAIA Indoor Championships this winter.
She wasn't alone in breaking a field event record, as
Trinity Gottler won with a new Midway high mark of 37.05 meters in the javelin. That was one of two wins on the day for Gottler, who had a winning toss of 37.05 meters in discuss and was also third at 10.44 in shot put.
Maddi Reed, who was second to Gottler with a 25.38-meter throw in javelin, won pole vault at 3.05, while
Kashlynn Rice took first with a 17.66-second run in the 100-meter hurdles.
Rice, Reed,
Machaiah Poynter and
Emilee Cecil were runners-up in 51.75 seconds in the 4x400 relay. Individual second-place runs were earned by Cecil in the 200 (27.57) and
Trinity Smith in the 5,000 (19:17.73), with Cecil also placing fourth in the 400 (1:07.53).
Ariah Egleston,
Stevie McSorley and
Macy Adams were third, fourth and sixth in the 1,500, running a 5:20.92, 5:23.55 and 5:292.47 respectively.
Adams (sixth, 2:39.63) and Egleston (seventh, 2:43.73) also scored in the 800 for the Eagles, who travel to Berea for the Landon Bond Classic next Saturday.
