SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.V. - Midway softball found its flare for the dramatic in a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech Friday, winning the opener 6-3 in 11 innings then scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of a 4-3 win in the finale.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 6, WVU TECH 3 (11 INNINGS)
Inserted into the game after the Golden Bears scored three runs in the first inning,
Sydney Roe held Tech off the scoreboard over nine-and-a-third innings of work in a dominant effort. Roe gave up just two hits with one walk while striking out six.
This is the second great effort in four appearances for the senior pitcher, who also didn't allow a hit in four innings of work
against Lindsey Wilson on March 27.
Eventually, the offense caught up. After a run off a Golden Bear error in the second, Midway tied the game in the fifth when
Sierra Bittner hit an RBI double then scored when next batter
Kennadi Thompson singled.
The score would remain 3-3 for six more innings before a fifth WVU Tech error to lead off the 11th opened the door for back-to-back triples that clinched Midway's win.
Payton Baum drove home
Autumn Wampler with a triple, then scored on another by
Tenley Gilbert. Gilbert, who tied Thompson with a game-high three hits, then scored on a wild pitch.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 4, WVU TECH 3
Though not as thrilling as her at-bat in the previous game, Baum again came through late in a 3-3 tie. After a single, walk and wild pitch put runners on second and third, Baum grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Thompson to put the Eagles ahead in the seventh inning.
The Golden Bears would threaten in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on first and second with one out, only to be thwarted by Midway pitcher
Athena Grimley, who finished off her complete game win by forcing a game-ending flyout and groundout.Â
Ryann Berger led the offense with three hits and two runs scored, improving her batting average to .437 on the season.
Gilbert, Bittner and
Sawyer Snodgrass all had two hits. Gilbert,
the reigning River States Conference Player of the Week, has recorded multiple hits in seven of her last eight games.
The sweep snapped a seven-game losing streak and moved the Eagles to 12-24 on the year with a 7-15 mark in conference play.
They have a difficult challenge ahead tomorrow with a road doubleheader against River States leader Rio Grande (14-4), with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
