Sprint football looks for consecutive wins after dominant week two

MIDWAY, Ky. - Looking to ride arguably the biggest momentum wave in program history, the Midway sprint football team hopes to avoid a letdown heading into a week-three home game.

The 1-1 Eagles will host 0-2 Quincy in a battle of teams from the Midwest Sprint Football League black division. If victorious, the Eagles would earn back-to-back wins for the first time since beginning play in 2022.

Here's a preview of the matchup at the Midway Turf Field

LAST WEEK: MIDWAY 50, BELLARMINE 0

The Eagles won the Battle for the Bourbon Barrel with shocking dominance, setting a single-game program record for points scored while also pitching the first ever shutout in team history.

The 50-point margin also tied for the second biggest win in MSFL history, trailing only Saint Mary of the Woods' 59-0 win over Oakland City on Sept. 23, 2023.

Through two weeks, the Midway offense is atop the league in total yards (491) and passing yards (341) per-game.

Dual threat quarterback Christian Carter, the reigning MSFL Offensive Player of the Week, has thrown for 573 yards, run for another 108, and accounted for eight touchdowns in two weeks while Ayden Bauwens (232 yards, two touchdowns) and Quincy Barber (185 yards, three touchdowns) lead a balanced receiving corps.

The offense was aided by an equally dominant defense at Bellarmine, with MSFL Defensive Player of the Week Tristian Euell leading the way. The freshman defensive lineman was credited with 11 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in the win.

His interception was one of four recorded by the Eagles, with junior defensive back Keegan Hill picking off two passes.

Midway's defense forced seven turnovers against the Knights and has taken the ball away a league-high 11 times through two weeks. It also had 11 tackles for loss, the second most its ever had in a game.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS

No one in the MSFL has had a more challenging start to 2025 than Quincy.

The Hawks opened the year with consecutive games against Calumet and Saint Mary of the Woods, who have met in the league championship game each of the last three years. As a result, they've started 0-2 with a negative-40 point differential.

Things have been rough on the defensive end, particularly when it comes to stopping the run. Quincy is allowing a league-high 221 yards per-game on the ground, including 289 in an 18-0 season-opening loss to Calumet.

The Hawks then fell behind 35-0 to Saint Mary of the Woods in week two, eventually losing 49-27. In defeat, freshman quarterback Kiet Truong threw for 204 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to receiver Gregory Quince, who had 74 yards on five catches.

MATCHUP HISTORY

The Hawks hold a 2-1 head-to-head advantage, though the Eagles won the most recent meeting 19-14 last season at the Midway Turf Field.

The Eagles took a 19-7 lead in the third quarter following a 63-yard touchdown reception by Chase Williams and the defense held strong late, forcing a turnover on downs on a Hawk drive that started at the Midway 33.

The Midway defense allowed just two scores on six Quincy red zone possessions. The win proved critical as both teams finished the season 2-4, but the Eagles earned the head-to-head tie-breaker, which earned them the fourth and final seed in the MSFL playoffs.

Saturday's game kicks off at 1 p.m.
