Pole vault leads the way for Midway women at Bellarmine Open

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two Midway pole vaulters narrowly missed hitting national qualifying standards, as the majority of the Eagle women's track and field team opened the indoor season at the Bellarmine Open on Friday.

Team scores were not recorded at the event.

Tying for fourth place in pole vault was Emerson VanScoy and Maddi Reed, who both topped out at 3.53 meters, just .02 meters below the NAIA National 'B' qualifying standard.

Reed already clinched a national spot after jumping 3.60 at the Marshall Opener in December, while VanScoy reached nationals in high jump in both indoor and outdoor a season ago.

Midway had four of the top-seven finishers in the event Friday, with Makayla Brooks placing sixth (3.38) and Cate Coppola finishing seventh (3.23).

The Eagles also had a pair of 10th-place finishers at the event, which included six NCAA Division-I programs.

Emilee Cecil ran the 60-meter dash in 8.25 seconds and Stevie McSorley ran a 2:33.75 in the 800-meter run.

Midway will be right back in action next weekend, traveling to Danville, Ky. for the Centre Indoor Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 24.
