BECKLEY, W. Va. - Midway made a furious rally after falling behind by 19 points, but couldn't hold a late lead as West Virginia Tech withheld the Eagles 108-104 in overtime in the penultimate game of the River States Conference men's basketball season Tuesday.
The Golden Bears closed the first half on a 20-4 run and saw their advantage climb to 56-37 on a Liam Craven 3-pointer three-and-a-half minutes into the second half.
That lead wouldn't be safe, thanks to a Midway offense that shot 77 percent from the field (24-of-31) in the second half.
It took awhile for the lead to significantly decrease, but the major surge came via an 18-4 run, in which the Eagles scored on eight of nine possession, tying the score at 89 on a
Tim Fuller 3-pointer with 3:20 to play.
Down 94-93 with 12 seconds to play,
Amari Wales blasted down court in six seconds and hit a layup to give the Eagles their first lead since the 5:16 mark of the first half.
It would only last five seconds unfortunately, as Ian Goings was fouled driving to the basket with just over a second to play. He made the first free throw but missed the second to send the game to overtime.
The Eagles briefly took a 98-95 lead on a
Decoreio Smith 3-pointer, then tied the score at 101 on another Fuller 3-pointer, but an already depleted bench took a big hit when two players fouled out, as the Golden Bears pulled ahead 106-101 with just over a minute remaining.
Following a free throw and a turnover, the Eagles caught a break when a Jackson Tackett foul was ruled flagrant, giving Midway the ball back down 106-104 after Wales made two free throws.
Wales nearly extended the game again, getting good penetration late in the shot clock and getting a clean look in the paint the rolled halfway down before spinning out. With seven seconds left, Cole Chapman hit two free throws to seal the game.
All told, nine players scored in double figures, with five of them coming from Midway. Smith had a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double, with Wales scoring 21.
Daylon Tanksley scored 16 points,
Sarvell Barksdale added 15 in 30 minutes off the bench and
Sam Parrish had 11 and seven assists.
Now 12-13 overall, Midway is 9-6 in RSC play entering what could prove to be a highly eventful final day of the regular season.
The Eagles,
who have clinched a spot in the conference tournament, are one game back of Rio Grande for second place in the East Division, and one game ahead of the Golden Bears, who clinched their spot on Tuesday.
WVU Tech also secured a tie-breaker over Midway,
having also beaten the Eagles in a previous meeting in January. Tech finishes the year at home against Indiana East (11-16, 3-12) on Saturday.
The Eagles, meanwhile, will be hosting East Division champ Shawnee State, which brings a 15-0 conference record to Marshall Gymnasium. That game tips at 3 p.m. Saturday.
