Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball beats second ranked opponent in two weeks, downs No. 24 SSU

MIDWAY, Ky. - After previously only beating one ranked opponent in its first decade as a program, the Midway men's basketball team defeated its second in a two-week span on Saturday.

Five Eagles scored in double figures  and Midway concluded the regular season with a 95-84 win over No. 24 Shawnee State at Marshall Gymnasium.

The Bears entered the day looking to become the first team to go undefeated in River States Conference play since the 2017-18 season. Instead, they found themselves on their heels immediately, surrendering a 10-1 Midway run after scoring on their first possession.

The Eagles did briefly trail in the first half, but rallied back and held the lead for the final 16:28 of game action, responding to every Shawnee State rally.

The lead stretched as high as seven early in the second half before twice shrinking to one, the second time on a Tyreon Payne layup to make it 65-64. But shortly after, Payne was called for a technical foul, which resulted in four-consecutive Amari Wales free throws.

Waled had a team-high 20 points, and concluded his own personal 6-0 run with a jump shot following a Bear miss to make it 71-64.

The lead would shrink to 71-68 before a 9-2 Eagle run concluded with a 3-point play by Breland Morrison to stretch the advantage to 81-70, as Midway effectively closed the game out from there.

The Eagles played just eight players to Shawnee State's 13, but still got 33 points from its second-unit, including an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double by Daylon Tanksley.

Sam Parrish and Dontavius King narrowly missed double-doubles of their own, Parrish getting 11 points and nine assists, King 10 points and nine rebounds. Parrish also had a game-high four steals.

Starting for the first time since Nov. 1, Sarvell Barksdale took advantage of his expanded roll, scoring 15 points for the Eagles, who finish the regular season 13-13 and 9-6 in the RSC.

The win follows an 87-76 win over then-No. 25 Indiana Kokomo on Feb. 7 and helped Midway lock up the No. 3 seed in the RSC East Division.

The Eagles will open the River States Tournament on the road against West Division No. 2 seed Indiana Southeast on Wednesday. The Grenadiers won the lone regular-season meeting between the two teams 73-64 on Jan. 31.

The postseason opener will immediately follow an opening-round game between the Midway and Indiana Southeast women's teams, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
