MIDWAY, Ky. - After winning just one River States Conference Player of the Week award in in the span of four years, Midway men's basketball captured two alone in one day.
The honorees, announced Monday, were Offensive Player of the Week
Amari Wales and Defensive Player of the Week
Dontavius King, who led the Eagles to a pair of critical road wins.
Wales had a monster week on the offensive end, averaging 27 points on 56 percent shooting. He started with a 30-point, nine-rebound effort to help the Eagles overcome an eight-point second-half deficit and rally
to defeat Indiana East 93-90 in overtime last Tuesday.
He followed up with a 24-point showing Saturday, leading a balanced attack in n 87-76 upset of No. 25 Indiana Kokomo,
just the second win against a ranked opponent in program history.
Anchoring the defensive end was King, who recorded a pair of double-doubles.
King had 19 points and 12 rebounds against IU East, then added 15 points and 12 rebounds along with three blocks in the win at Kokomo.
This is the second Offensive Player of the Week award won by Wales,
who was also honored on Nov. 4, 2024. Prior to that, the most recent conference honor came when Kwon Evans was named Player of the Week
on Feb. 1, 2022.
The Eagles are now 7-4 in RSC play and can clinch a spot in the conference tournament with a win against Kentucky Christian at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Midway also has a critical road game against 7-4 Rio Grande on Thursday, where the winner will likely be in position to land the No. 2 seed in the RSC East Division and a home game in the opening round of the conference playoffs.
