(Williamsburg, Ky.) - Midway had a rough pre-holiday trip to Williamsburg as they fell to host University of the Cumberlands 79-64 on Wednesday.
Despite jumping out to an early the lead, the Eagles struggled to maintain their offensive momentum, shooting just 38.5 percent from the floor compared to Cumberlands' 46.7. That doesn't mean there weren't bright spots, including Miranda Rone (SR/Bowling Green, KY), who scored 26 points to lead all scorers on 55 percent field goal shooting. McKinzie Laswell (SR/Paoli, Ind.) dumped in 14 points of her own and Me'Lisa Martinez (SR/Nashville, TN) contributed another 10.
The Eagles continued to show that they are a force to be reckoned with on defense, nabbing 34 rebounds and nine steals and swatting two blocks. Laswell recorded 10 rebounds on the day, enough for her second double-double of the season and her fourth game with 10 or more rebounds this year.
Despite the outcome, Head Coach Daniel Price said he saw his team make strides, "We've always been a defense-first program and I think our players showed today that they're taking that in. I thought we did a nice job with our full-court press, especially early in the game. I could tell that it bothered UC. It seemed to keep them from finding an offensive rhythm and led to a lot of turnovers on their part."
Midway moves to 3-5 on the season and will face #17 Georgetown College at 7 p.m. on December 1 in Marshall Gymnasium.
