Eagles hang on for 10th win of the season

Cincinnati, Ohio – For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the Midway University women's basketball team has eclipsed the double-digit win mark after they defeated Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) on Monday night.

The Eagles improved their overall record to 10-4 and 2-1 within the River States Conference after they defeated the rival Eagles, 70-57.

Midway got a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds from freshman, Timitryi Patterson (Bowling Green, Ky.) off the bench to lead the way. Senior, Breanna Ball (Dayton, Ohio) chipped in with 15, while junior, Courtney Pfister (Mt. Washington, Ky.) added 10.

The Eagles found themselves in an early hole trailing 6-5, but they responded with an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 advantage into the second period.

The visitors carried their momentum from the first quarter into the second where they outscored Cincinnati Christian 20-9. CCU cut the Midway lead to two, 20-18, but over the final six minutes and change in the period, Midway went on a 10-0 run.

The trio of Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.), Patterson and Ball led the way in the run. Tonge and Patterson scored the opening eight points of the run, while Ball closed it out with a pair of freebies to give her team a 30-18 lead at intermission.

Midway would continue to hold a double-digit lead throughout the third period as they pushed their lead to its largest of the game at 45-27 when Jasmine Johnson (Liberty, Ky.) found Madison Jones (Union, Ky.) for an open triple. Midway would take a 50-35 lead into the final quarter.

Cincinnati Christian came out firing in the fourth when they cut the lead to nine, 57-48, with five minutes remaining, but Johnson stepped up and nailed a trey to push the lead back out to 12. CCU made one last effort cutting the deficit to 10, but Midway responded with six unanswered to come away with the 70-57 win.

Midway finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (26-61) from the floor, while hitting six 3's in 15 attempts for 40 percent. Cincinnati Christian didn't fare as well shooting 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field and 11.1 percent (6-15) from the 3-point line. Midway won the rebounding battle, 43-35, thanks to a game-high 12 rebounds from Patrice Tonge.

The Eagles will return to the hardwood in less than 24 hours when they travel to Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio) on Tuesday night.
