Midway, Ky. – Midway University baseball senior, Hector Quinones, has been named the River States Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week of March 13-19, according to conference officials who announced on Monday, March 20.
The weekly honor is the first in the history of the Midway University baseball program as they are in their inaugural season. The weekly honor also is the first of the career for Quinones as he is playing his final season of collegiate baseball as an Eagle.
In four games last week against Ohio Christian University, the Barceloneta, Puerto Rico native went 6-for-18 at the plate for a .333 batting average and a .611 slugging percentage. He also tallied two doubles and a home run, while driving in six runners and scoring three runs himself.
The home run that Quinones hit came in the final game where the Eagles came away with an 11-0 win. He stepped to the plate with the bases juiced as he crushed the first pitch he saw and sent it over the center field fence for a grand slam – the first in the history of the program.
For most players, hitting a grand slam might be the most memorable thing that happens in a game, but for Quinones, it came second. He also was the starting pitcher for the Eagles as he completed one of the rarest feats in baseball, a no-hitter. The senior didn't allow a hit in seven innings of work allowing just four base runners, while punching out eight batters.
His numbers rank as some of the best in the River States. He ranks ninth in at bats (76), tied for eighth in runs batted in (16), seventh in total bases (35) and tied for fourth in home runs with four.
Quinones has helped lead the Eagles to a 12-12 record overall and a 9-3 mark in league play.
