Williamsburg, Ky. – The Midway University women's tennis team returned to action on Friday afternoon when they traveled to Williamsburg, Ky. to take on Mid-South Conference power Cumberlands (Ky.) in a non-conference tilt.
The Patriots – who were receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll – proved to be too much as they were able to cruise to a 9-0 victory over the visiting Eagles (4-3).
The Eagles didn't have much luck in doubles play as they didn't win a game in the three doubles matches. The Patriots swept all the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the match entering singles play.
The Patriots (7-6) won at No. 5 singles to push their lead to 4-0. Then they won at No. 6 singles to clinch the match and take a 5-0 lead. Cumberlands then won at No. 4 and No. 1 singles to push their lead to 7-0.
Madison Chambers (Pennsville, N.J.) and Elizabeth Toth (Algonquin, Ill.) each won a game in the second set at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but the Patriots overpowered the Eagles en route to the 9-0 victory.
Joe Reyes' squad will now have a quick turnaround as they will return to action on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. ET when they host Alice Lloyd (Ky.) at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
