Oakland City, Ind. – The Midway University baseball team returned to the diamond on Tuesday, April 18, when they traveled to Oakland City, Ind. to take on Oakland City (Ind.) in a mid-week tilt.
The Mighty Oaks (14-23) built a 6-0 lead after three innings en route to the 9-5 win. The Eagles attempted a comeback with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while adding two in the eighth, but they came up four runs short in the end.
Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) started the game for Midway and was dealt with the loss in the end. Cespedes (0-4) allowed six runs – five earned – on four hits in four innings.
Midway got going in the fourth inning when junior, DJ Lewis (San Diego, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) who singled earlier in the frame.
Then in the fifth inning, the Eagles added another run on a ground out by Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.). Scoring on the groundout was Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) who reached on a one-out single.
The Eagles added a run in the sixth before adding two in the eighth. In the inning, Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) opened with a single and after he stole second and third, Maguire singled to score the junior from third.
Two innings later in the eighth Croslin reached on an error to open the inning and two batters later, Lewis delivered an RBI single. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter, Scott Heideman (Elizabethtown, Ky.) singled to score Lewis.
Following Cespedes on the mound was Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.). Lindsey was efficient in his two innings of work allowing just one hit.
The duo of Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Neal Kirkpatrick (Central City, Ky.) pitched the final two innings. Jones allowed two runs on four hits, while Kirkpatrick allowed an unearned run in 1.2 innings of work.
The Eagles will look to put an end to their six game skid this weekend when they jump back into River States Conference play by traveling to Rio Grande (Ohio). The two teams will play doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday beginning at 1 p.m. ET on both days.
