Women's Tennis finishes regular season with RSC victory

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Midway University women's tennis team closed out their regular season in style on Saturday afternoon when they defeated Carlow (Pa.) in a River States Conference matchup in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Eagles trailed 2-1 after the three doubles matches, but they battled back to tie the match at 4-4 before they won the final singles match to win the match 5-4. After going 1-2 in doubles, Midway went 4-2 in the six singles matches.

Midway got off to a good start after they won the first match at No. 2 doubles. Elizabeth Toth (Algonquin, Ill.) teamed with Diana Burkee (West Allis, Wis.) and defeated Justin Jacquillard and Carmen Kabasky by a final score of 8-5.

The lead for the visitors was short lived as the Celtics (2-5, 2-4 RSC) battled back to win at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The Eagles were quick to respond after they took the first singles match to tie the match. The victory came at No. 2 singles were Madison Chambers (Pennsville, N.J.) won in straight sets over Jen Wright 6-3, 6-3.

Then at No. 1 singles, senior, Erin Pigman pushed Midway's lead to 3-2. The Harrodsburg, Ky. native won 6-2, 6-2 over Emily Armstrong in the top singles matchup.

After Carlow came right back and tied the match up at 3-3 with a win at No. 5 singles, the Eagles moved one step closer to clinching the match with a win at No. 6 singles. Jaylin Jones (Russellville, Ky.) defeated Carmen Kabasky, 6-4, 6-3 to push Midway's lead back to 4-3.

The home team wouldn't trail for long as they won at No. 4 singles to tie the match for the final time at 4-4. The match would come down to No. 3 singles where Elizabeth Toth and Justina Jacquillard duked it out.

Jacquillard won the first set at 7-5, but Toth came battling back. The second set was a back-and-forth battle, but Toth was able to squeak out a 7-5 victory to force a decisive third set. Toth took control of the third set from the get-go as she cruised to a 6-2 win to clinch the match, 5-4.

The Eagles close out the regular season with a 6-7 record overall and a 3-3 play in conference action. The Eagles and the Celtics will meet again in next weekend's River States Conference Women's Tennis Tournament in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
