Cold shooting hampers Eagles in loss to Cougars

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- After getting a win in their season opener a week ago, the Midway women's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Friday night when they traveled to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) for the first of two games in the 'Buckeye State'.

The Eagles were unable to improve their record to 2-0 to start the season as they couldn't overcome a poor shooting night allowing the Cougars (3-1) to slip past the visitors 74-60 in Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

After shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor and surpassing the century mark in their season opening victory just seven days ago, Friday's game proved to be the exact opposite.

The Eagles (1-1) scored just 60 points shooting just 32.4 percent (22-68) from the floor in the loss. Midway also shot just 29.4 percent (5-17) from three. Meanwhile, the Cougars shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from floor overall and 45.5 percent from behind the arc where they went 5-of-11.

Midway did turn the visitors over 22 times, but they also committed 16 miscues of their own. The home team also won the rebounding battle 47-40.

The first half was back-and-forth with each team trading the lead, but the Cougars closed the half on a 15-7 run to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.

A driving layup from Kelsee Kinder (Detroit, Mich.) cut the deficit to three, 41-38, with just over seven minutes remaining in the third stanza, but Mount Vernon Nazarene outscored Midway 17-5 in the remaining seven minutes and change in the third stanza as they took a 58-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles had the deficit down to 11 on a couple of occasions, but they were unable to get any closer as Mount Vernon Nazarene would cruise to the 74-60 victory.

Freshman, Lauren Boehm (Georgetown, Ky.) led the way for the Eagles posting her first career double-double. Boehm finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) added 10 points, while four others added eight points apiece.

Kelsee Kinder, Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.), Madison Jones (Walton, Ky.) and Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.) added eight points each, while Callahan pulled down seven boards.

The Eagles will look to return to the winning side of the ledger on Saturday when they take on the University of Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m. ET in Lima, Ohio.
