MOBILE, Ky. -- The Midway University baseball team took the field for the first time in 2018 on Friday, February 2, when they traveled down south to Mobile, Alabama to take on the University of Mobile.
The Eagles (0-2) got off to a tough start in the first game of the doubleheader as they collected just three hits as Mobile (2-0) came away with the 4-0 victory. Then in the second game, the Rams scored in four of the seven innings en route to the 9-2 victory.
Game 1 – Mobile 4, Midway 0
It looked as though Midway was going to score first when Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) reached on an error to open the game. The next batter, Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) singled to move Peavler to third, but he would be caught down in a rundown when he tried to score on a fielder's choice later in the inning.
Mobile went on to score single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to come away with the 4-0 victory. After the first inning, Midway didn't have a runner reach second base. Mobile starter, Braxton Rhodes, tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
Taking the loss for the Eagles was senior, Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.). Cespedes (0-1) tossed five innings allowing three runs on eight hits. Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the sixth inning allowing one unearned run with one strikeout.
Peavler and Maguire accounted for two of the three hits for the Eagles. Sophomore, Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) picked up the other hit for Midway.
Game 2 – Mobile 9, Midway 2
After a missed scoring opportunity in the opening frame of the second game, Midway capitalized on their opportunity in the second game. Layne Peavler and Danny Maguire each singled, then a sacrifice bunt by Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) moved the duo into scoring position.
The next batter, Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) grounded out to score Peavler from third as Midway held the early 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for Midway, the lead was short lived. The Rams scored nine unanswered runs to take the 9-1 lead. The Eagles got back on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late.
Matthew Olson singled to open the inning and then, two batters later, Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) singled to move Olson to third. Olson came around to score when Spencer Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) grounded into a double play.
Junior left-hander, Brandon Aoki (Camarillo, Calif.) started the game for the Eagles and tossed four innings. Aoki (0-1) allowed seven runs – six earned – on 10 hits. Logan Etherington (Frankfort, Ky.) allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of relief.
