Beckley, W. Va. -- After having to cancel their mid-week game with Shawnee State (Ohio), the Midway University baseball team returned to the diamond on Friday, March 30, when they traveled to Beckley, West Virginia to begin a three game series with West Virginia Tech.
The twinbill got off to a rough start for the Eagles, as the Golden Bears (10-23, 4-10 RSC) won the opener 11-4. Midway (16-13, 10-3 RSC) battled back in the second game and held on for the 10-2 victory to split the doubleheader.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single nine inning game at 10:30 a.m. ET at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.
Game 1 – WVU Tech 11, Midway 4
It was a rough start for Midway starter, Brandon Aoki (Camarillo, Calif.). The left-hander allowed four runs in the first inning on a three-run home run and a solo shot. Aoki would be dealt with the loss after allowing seven runs – six earned – on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Senior, Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) replaced Aoki with one out in the fourth and would pitch the final 4.2 innings. He allowed four runs – two earned – on five hits. He also fanned four and allowed four free passes.
Offensively, Midway scored two in the third and seventh innings, while adding a single run in the ninth. The Eagles, unfortunately left 11 runners on base. Kurt Paldino (Overland Park, Kans.) led the way going 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI's and one run scored.
Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) added two hits and an RBI, while Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) collected the other RBI for the Eagles. Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) scored two runs and Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) scored one run apiece.
Game 2 – Midway 10, WVU Tech 2
After tallying just eight hits in the opener, the Midway offense went to work in the second game with 10 runs on 14 hits. The Eagles scored one in the second, third and fourth innings, while adding five in the fifth and two in the sixth en route to the 10-2 victory.
Midway also got another solid outing from Carlos Cespedes. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs on four hits in the complete game. The senior also finished with four strikeouts.
Overall, the Eagles had six players tally multi-hit games. Layne Peavler led the way going 4-for-4 with a run scored. The trio of Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.), Koy Lindsey (Sonora, Ky.) and Danny Maguire all recorded a triple in the win. Olson added two hits and four RBI's, while Lindsey had two hits and three RBI's and Maguire collected two hits, an RBI and three runs.
Barrett Croslin and Kurt Paldino also added two hit games. Paldino scored two runs, while Croslin scored once. Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) also added an RBI and a run scored.
