DANVILLE, Ky. -- After having Saturday off, the Midway University women's tennis team returned to the courts on Sunday, March 4, when they traveled to Danville to take on Centre College – an NCAA Division III foe.
The Colonels (3-5) swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Centre followed that up by winning the six singles matches to win the match 9-0 over the Eagles (4-3).
In doubles action, Midway was led by the duo of Jilian Verbrugghe (Macomb, Mich.) and Raquel Tyo (Grove City, Ohio) at No. 3 doubles. Verbrugghe and Tyo scored the most points of Midway's three doubles teams, but ended up coming up short 8-2.
Centre went on to win 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and 8-1 at No. 2 doubles to take a 3-0 lead.
Midway failed to win a singles match, but put up a good fight in the matches led by Verbrugghe at No. 5 singles. The freshman lost the first set 6-3, but battled back to win the second set by a score of 6-3 to force a tiebreaker. Emma Ramsey went on to win the tiebreaker 10-7.
Fellow freshman, Raquel Tyo also had a good match at No. 6 singles. Priscilla Suh of Centre downed Tyo in straight sets 6-1 and 6-3.
The Colonels went on to win the final four singles matches in straight sets to win the match 9-0.
Midway will have a quick turnaround as they are back in action on Monday, March 5, when they host No. 25 Georgetown College at 4 p.m. ET at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
