CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Midway University softball team was back in action on Tuesday, March 6, when they played two more games at the NTC Spring Games down in Clermont, Florida.

In their first game of the day, the Eagles took on Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). Midway committed five errors as the Cougars (7-4) capitalized scoring eight runs in the 8-3 win.

Midway would battle back in their second game of the day when they took on Spring Arbor (Mich.). The Eagles (5-5) got a strong pitching performance as they earned a 5-1 win over the Cougars (2-6).

Game 1 – Mount Vernon Nazarene 8, Midway 3

Errors plagued the Eagles in their opener on Tuesday as they committed five miscues. The Cougars took advantage of the miscues and plated eight runs, including four unearned runs.

Midway's offense tallied three runs on eight hits in the loss. Midway scored two in the third and one in the sixth.

Leading the way offensively for Midway was the duo of Alyssa Yates (Georgetown, Ky.) and Dee Lewis (Shelbyville, Ky.). Yates went 2-for-3, while Lewis went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) added an RBI and a run scored, while Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.) and Marissa Walker (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) each scored one run apiece.

Yates (3-2) started the game and allowed eight runs – four earned – on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work in the circle. Hannah Poynter (Louisville, Ky.) replaced the freshman and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings allowing just two hits.

Game 2 – Midway 5, Spring Arbor 1

Midway's defense was much better in the second game as they committed just one error. The Eagles also got a strong pitching performance from Hannah Poynter in the circle.

The junior turned in one of her better performances of the season. Poynter (1-2) allowed just one run, while the Cougars scattered four hits in her seven innings of work.

She got some help from her offense as they plated two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth en route to the 5-1 win.

In the third, Carly Benz singled and scored on a double by Dee Lewis, while Lewis came around to score when Jasmine Jordan (Clarksville, Tenn.) reached on an error.

In the fifth, head coach, Tripp Swisher, called for the double steal with runners on the corners. Kendall Horn (Taylorsville, Ky.) singled and would later move to third on a single by Marissa Walker. Walker then forced a throw when she stole second allowing Horn to score from third.

The Eagles tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth. Dee Lewis walked and Kelsey Shepherd (New Castle, Ky.) was called up to pinch run. After Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) singled, both Shepherd and Clark scored on a double by Aliyah Johnson (Louisville, Ky.).
