Midway Baseball splits doubleheader with No. 14 Point Park, win series 2-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After taking the series opener from No. 14 Point Park (Pa.) on Friday, the Midway University baseball team would need to win just one of the two games on Saturday to claim their biggest River States Conference series victory of the season.

The Eagles did just that as they won the opener 8-7 after scoring a run in the top of the 10th inning. Midway was unfortunately unable to complete the series sweep as the Pioneers (31-4, 19-2 RSC) won the series finale by a final score of 13-4.

The three-game series completes a busy, yet successful week for Luther Bramblett's team. His team went 3-1 on the week with a win over No. 20 Campbellsville (Ky.) and two wins over No. 14 Point Park. Midway now sits at 21-18 overall and 13-7 in conference play.

With just six more league games remaining, the Eagles sit in third place in the conference standings. They trail Point Park and IU Southeast – who are tied for first with a pair of 19-2 records – by 5.5 games. Midway is scheduled to host Rio Grande (Ohio) this weekend.

Game 1 – Midway 8, Point Park 7

After seven complete innings, the Eagles trailed 4-3 as they were down to their final six outs coming to bat in the eighth. Luckily for the visitors, they had some late inning magic in them. The Eagles scored four runs on three hits in the eighth to claim a 7-4 lead.

Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) hit a one-out single, Koy Lindsey (Sonora, Ky.) walked and Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) was hit to load the bases with one out. Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.) pinch ran for Lindsey and Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) pinch run for Lampreia as Francis Mejia (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) stepped to the plate.

Mejia had a great at bat and walked to bring home Olson to for the first run. After a strikeout, Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) ripped a two run single – his fourth hit of the game – to score Marion and Broady to give the Eagles the 6-4 lead. Mejia then came around to score on an RBI single from Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) to extend Midway's lead to 7-4.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Pioneers scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. They had a chance to walk-off with bases loaded and one out, but Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) was able to get a 6-2-3 double play to end the threat and send it to extras.

Midway regained the lead with a run in the top of the 10th. Broady was hit and after a sac bunt from Mejia and a single from Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) he moved to third. Broady then scored on a sacrifice fly from Maguire as Midway once again held an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the 10th, Croslin got a strikeout, a ground out and a fly out to end the game and seal the 8-7 victory. Croslin recorded his first victory of the season allowing one run on one hit in two innings of work.

Midway had four players with at least two hits in the win. Maguire led the way going 4-for-5 with four RBI's. Luttor added a 2-for-3 game with two RBI's, Mejia went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and game-high three runs, while Peavler went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) started the game pitched five innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) followed Cespedes pitched one inning allowing one run on one hit.

Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) and a Noah Marion helped bridge the game to get to Croslin. Lindsay allowed one run on four hits in 1.2 innings, while Marion tossed 0.1 innings allowing one run on one hit.

Game 2 – Point Park 13, Midway 4

Midway struck first with two in the first and one in the second to hold a 3-1 lead after two complete. In the first, Layne Peavler singled and later scored on an RBI single from Graeham Luttor, while Luttor came around to score on an RBI single from Barrett Croslin.

Then in the second, Spencer Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) opened the inning with a single as Carlos Cespedes was brought in as a courtesy runner. Cespedes would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly from Danny Maguire.

The Pioneers, however, posted their first crooked number of the series in the bottom of the sixth as they took a 7-3 lead. Midway scored a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Maguire to score Francis Mejia who singled earlier in the inning as the lead was down to 7-4.

Point Park would continue to add to their lead with two in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth en route to the 13-4 victory.

Matthew Olson started the game and lasted 2.2 innings. The sophomore allowed seven runs – six earned – on seven hits. Peyton Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) replaced Olson and allowed four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Cameron McAnally (Owenton, Ky.) and Mitchell Kreidenweis (Independence, Ky.) tossed the final two innings with each working one inning. McAnally allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while Kreidenweis allowed two hits.
