Yazell passes milestone in Midway's dominate win over Ecclesia

PARAGOULD, Ark. -- Following an exhibition loss to Morehead State (Ky.), the Midway women's basketball team opened up a six-game road swing on Friday night with a dominate win over Ecclesia (Ark.) in their first of two games in the Pioneer Classic hosted by Crowley's Ridge (Ark.).

The Eagles dominated each and every facet of the game taking a 33-8 lead after the first period before cruising to the 123-33 win for their fourth consecutive victory.

The 123 points in the most points scored in a single contest since the 2018-19 team scored 118 in a 118-47 win over Wright State Lake (Ohio).

Not only did Midway come away with the dominate win, but it was an extra special night for Haleigh Yazell who surpassed 1,000 points for her career. With 1:37 left in the second quarter, the senior shooting guard from Paris, Ky. knocked down a long ball giving her 1,001 career points. She went on to score 10 points bringing her career total to 1,002 points.

Yazell knocked down her first triple of the game about midway through the first quarter as she kickstarted an 18-0 run that saw the Eagles build a 28-4 lead with 1:51 left in the first.

The Royals scored the first two points of the second stanza, but Midway went on to outscore the opposition 33-3 in the remainder of the quarter as they took a dominating 66-13 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles would carry their 33-3 run into the third quarter stretching it to a 55-3 run that saw the lead grow to 88-13. Leah Shelley (Paducah, Ky.) and Sierra Graham (Shepherdsville, Ky.) hit back-to-back triples to end the quarter as Midway took a 94-19 lead into the fourth.

Emma Glisson (South Fulton, Tenn.) and Kodi Kinder (Detroit, Mich.) each hit a pair of treys early in the fourth quarter before Macey Goff (Lexington, Ky.) hit a late triple making the final score 123-33.

All 15 players that played for the Eagles found their name in the scoring column, while 12 of the 15 scored at least six points. They finished the contest shooting 54.7 percent overall, while they hit 18-of-42 from downtown for 42.9 percent.

Jill Enix (Pineville, Ky.) led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Sierra Graham and Leah Shelley added 13 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench. Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) then chipped in 11 points in the win.

The Eagles made it a point to make the extra pass as they recorded 34 assists on 41 made field goals. Glisson dished out a team-best seven dimes, while Yazell finished with five.

Midway forced the Royals to shoot just 19.1 percent from the floor and 6.7 percent from three, while they also forced 34 turnovers leading to a 57-0 edge in points off turnovers.

Alan Foster's squad will wrap up their trip to Paragould on Saturday when they take on Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) at 2 p.m. ET in their final game of the Pioneer Classic.
