GRAYSON, Ky. -- After suffering a sweep to IU Southeast over the weekend, the Midway Baseball squad returned to their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon when they posted an extra innings victory over Kentucky Christian University in nearby Grayson, Kentucky.
Tied at 8-8 after nine innings, the game moved to extra innings where the Eagles would score six runs in the 11th before holding the Knights scoreless in the bottom half en route to the 14-8 victory.
After breaking the program record for hits a game a couple of weeks ago with 21 against Cincinnati Christian (Ohio), the Eagles – who improved to 9-10 overall with the win – nearly topped the program record once again with 19 hits.
The Eagles did, however, commit six errors in the win which allowed seven of the eight runs scored by the Knights to be unearned.
Midway was cruising up 7-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, but the visitors committed three miscues allowing six unearned runs to score as the Knights – who fell to 3-9 overall with the loss – took a 7-6 lead heading into the eighth.
The Eagles responded with two runs in the eighth to regain the 8-7 lead. Kurt Paldino (Overland Park, Kans.) hit a sac fly scoring Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.), while Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an RBI single by Francis Mejia (Wesley Chapel, Fla.).
The Knights, however, wouldn't go away as they scored another in the eighth tying the game at 8-8. That would be the final run the home team would score as Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) closed the door.
The senior got a pair of strikeouts to end the eighth before tossing scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th setting up the Eagles where they would score six in the 11th for the 14-8 victory.
In the 11th, Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.) had a two-run single before later scoring on a passed ball, while Koy Lindsey (Campbellsville, Ky.) laid down a terrific bunt down the third base line scoring Layne Peavler.
The final two runs of the inning – Matthew Olson and Koy Lindsey – came around to score on a two-run single from Kurt Paldino.
The six-run cushion was more than enough for Lampreia who picked up a pair of strikeouts in the 11th to seal the 14-8 victory. The senior picked up the win after tossing 3.2 innings allowing just two hits with five punchouts.
Noah Rodman (Lexington, Ky.) got the start and tossed five strong innings allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Jacob Cole (Mount Eden, Ky.) allowed four unearned runs in 1.2 innings, while Garrett Dolinich (Dickson, Tenn.) allowed three unearned runs in 0.2 innings.
Kurt Paldino led the way offensively going 4-for-5 with four RBI's, while Layne Peavler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and four runs. Haden Fox (Somerset, Ky.) added three hits and an RBI, while Matthew Olson and Tyson Orr had two hits apiece. Noah Marion chipped in with a hit and three RBI's, Koy Lindsey had two RBI's and Francis Mejia also had an RBI in the win.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they return to action on Wednesday when they host Shawnee State (Ohio) for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET at Chandler Field.
