Eagles burn Trailblazers for 18-3 run-rule victory in series opener

VERSAILLES, Ky. -- The Midway University baseball team began their fourth River States Conference series of the season on Friday when they hosted Ohio Christian University in their series opener at Chandler Field.

The game was scheduled to last nine innings, but the Eagles put together two monster innings en route to a big victory. The two big innings came in the second and fifth frames where Midway scored seven and eight runs, respectively, as they dominated for the 18-3 victory.

The Trailblazers scored first with two runs in the second, but from that point on, it was all Midway. The Eagles answered Ohio Christian's two runs with seven runs on seven hits.

Haden Fox (Somerset, Ky.) opened the inning with a bang as he clubbed a two-run home run – his second of the season – that tied the game at 2-2. Tyson Orr (Nashville, Tenn.) added an RBI single before the Eagles went deep for the second-long ball of the inning.

With two on, Kurt Paldino (Overland Park, Kans.) turned on the first pitch he saw. The freshman hit a laser that cleared the left field fence for a three-run home run – his fourth of the season. A little later, Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) – who began the inning with a single – wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single.

The Eagles continued to add to their lead with one in the third and two in the fourth. In the third, Tyrin Orr (Nashville, Tenn.) opened the inning with a single before scoring when Paldino reached on an error.

Then in the fourth, Nichols doubled and later scored when Tyrin Orr struck out, but reached on a dropped third strike.

Holding a 10-3 edge, the Eagles landed the knockout punch in the fifth where they put up an eight spot on the scoreboard. Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) ripped a two-run double before Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) sent a single up the middle that scored two more.

Lampreia later scored on an error and Tyrin Orr scored on a wild pitch before Corey Plahuta (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Koy Lindsey (Campbellsville, Ky.) each added RBI singles to cap off the eight-run inning.

Gus Garrison (Cynthiana, Ky.) ran into trouble in the second and fourth innings but got plenty of backup from his offense. The junior allowed three runs – one earned – with six strikeouts in six innings. Garrett Dolinich (Dickson, Tenn.) tossed a 1-2-3 seventh with a pair of punchouts.

Four different players had multi-hit games, while a total of 10 players had a hit. Cameron Nichols went 3-for-3, while Matthew Olson, Koy Lindsey and Tyson Orr added two hits apiece.

The two squad will wrap up their series on Saturday when they meet for a doubleheader at Chandler Field beginning at noon ET.
