RedStorm take game one of series over Midway Baseball

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- After weather concerns forced the series to be pushed up a day, the Midway University baseball team began their three-game series with Rio Grande (Ohio) on Thursday afternoon at Bob Evans Field in Rio Grande, Ohio.

The Eagles held an early 1-0 lead after a run in the third inning, but the RedStorm scored four unanswered before adding a run in the eighth to seal the 5-2 victory taking game one of the three-game series.

Due to the threat of inclement weather that is expected on Friday afternoon, the two squads attempted to complete a second game, but the contest was suspended due to darkness after six innings as the score is tied at 7-7.

The suspended game will be completed on Friday afternoon at noon ET, while the final game of the three-game series will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended game.

The Eagles – who fell to 15-16 overall and 6-7 in conference play with the loss – got the scoring started in the completed game on Thursday. With the bases loaded in the third, Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) picked up an RBI on a groundout giving Midway an early 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived, however, after the RedStorm rallied with a tying run in the bottom half of the third. A Dylan Shockley groundout tied the game at 1-1 before the RedStorm added two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Midway got back on the board with a run in the eighth cutting the deficit to 4-2. Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) walked and Koy Lindsey (Campbellsville, Ky.) doubled putting runners at second and third with one out. Nichols then re-entered and hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-center scoring Luttor.

The Eagles had their chances in the middle innings and had Rio starter, Zach Harvey on the ropes. But to Harvey's credit, he got three-consecutive 1-2-3 innings and got the victory after seven strong innings. Shockley then entered in the ninth and closed the door sealing the win.

Gus Garrison (Cynthiana, Ky.) was dealt with the loss for the Eagles after allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits. He also fanned seven in his 6.1 innings on the bump. Andy Melgoza (Oxnard, Calif.) pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing one run with four strikeouts.

Tyson Orr (Nashville, Tenn.) led the way at the plate going 2-for-5, while Cameron Nichols drove in both runs for the Eagles with one hit.
