Midway Baseball drops series opener to IU Southeast

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- After canceling their two mid-week games earlier this week, the Midway baseball team took on Indiana University Southeast in their series opener at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex in New Albany, Indiana on Thursday afternoon.

After the game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes to start, the Eagles struck first with a run in the second frame for the early 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived after the Grenadiers scored three in the second and one in the third en route to the 4-2 victory.

Midway – who fell to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in River States Conference play following the loss – got a two-out double from Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) in the opening frame, but failed to score. The visitors scratched a run across in the second stanza for the early 1-0 lead.

A double from catcher, Koy Lindsey (Campbellsville, Ky.) opened the frame as Tyrin Orr (Nashville, Ky.) was brought in as a courtesy runner. A wild pitch moved the junior to third before an RBI groundout from Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) scored the game's first run.

The Grenadiers – who improved to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in league play with the win – answered Midway's run with three of their own in the bottom half of the second without recording a base hit.

The Eagles surrendered a pair of walks in the opening stanza but were able to get out of the inning unscathed. Midway, however, wasn't so fortunate in the second when IU Southeast took advantage of six Midway walks scoring three runs without a base knock.

IU Southeast didn't record their first hit until a two-out double in the third when they stretched their lead to 4-1 following an RBI single from Santrel Farmer scoring Jordan Branz.

After allowing eight free passes in the opening two frames, the Eagles only allowed one from the third inning on, but they couldn't get their offense going until the eighth inning when they scored one run on two hits.

Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) singled to open the inning before advancing to third on a base hit from Tyson Orr (Nashville, Ky.). Peavler then scored on an RBI groundout from Luttor to cut it to 4-2, but that would be as close as they got as IU Southeast held on for the win.

Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) was dealt with the loss for the Eagles after allowing three runs without allowing a hit. The left-hander did, however, walk five batters in his 1.1 innings.

Mark Taylor (Cynthiana, Ky.) followed Salado and tossed 4.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with four walks. Jacob Cole (Mount Eden, Ky.) tossed two scoreless frames in the loss.

The Eagles had seven hits led by Koy Lindsey going 2-for-4. Graeham Luttor and Matthew Olson each had a hit and an RBI, while Layne Peavler, Tyson Orr and Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) accounted for Midway's remaining hits.

The Eagles and the Grenadiers are scheduled to wrap up their series on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET in New Albany, Ind. with weather permitting.
