LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Midway University men's volleyball team collected their first Mid-South Conference victory of the season on Saturday when they swept Brewton-Parker (Ga.) to wrap up their trip to Cumberland University (Tenn.) for three MSC matchups.
The Eagles posted one of their best offensive performances of the season as they would cruise to the 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) for the first MSC victory in program history.
Midway – who improved to 2-9 overall and 1-8 in conference play – posted a season best .392 attacking clip with 35 kills. It was an efficient outing for the Midway offense as they committed a season-low six attacking errors in 74 swings.
Midway's defense, meanwhile, held the Barons – who fell to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in league play – to a .123 attacking clip with 29 kills and 19 attacking errors.
Following an ace from Nate Martin (Pickerington, Ohio), the Eagles held a 19-16 lead, but the Barons scored three unanswered to tie it at 19. Midway closed the set on a 6-3 run getting three kills from Victor Pietro (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) and another from Gavin-James Andaya (Kapolei, Hawaii) en route to the 25-22 win in the opening set.
Midway took control of the second frame from the get-go. The Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with an 8-2 run before going on a 7-1 run to build an 18-7 lead. Brewton-Parker cut the deficit to 19-12, but the Eagles cruised to the 25-17 victory to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
Then in the third set, the Eagles soared to a 12-2 lead early as they would complete the 3-0 sweep with the 25-17 win.
Midway had six players record at least three kills in the victory led by 16 kills from freshman, Victor Pietro. It was an efficient performance from the Brazilian committing zero attacking errors in 29 swings, while he also added eight digs.
Gavin-James Andaya chipped in 15 assists, five digs and five kills, while Ryan Meyers (St. Louis, Mo.) also ran the offense finishing with 13 assists and three kills.
Nate Martin and Connor Libs (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) had four kills apiece, while Martin also carded four digs. Eric Rosado (San German, Puerto Rico) added three kills and freshman libero, Kyle West (Dry Ridge, Ky.) chalked up eight digs.
Jonea Rima's club will return to action on Tuesday, March 12, when they host Campbellsville (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
