Eagles unable to get offense going in series opening loss to IU Kokomo

VERSAILLES, Ky. -- The Midway baseball team opened their final home weekend series of the season on Friday when they hosted Indiana University Kokomo to begin a pivotal River States Conference series at Chandler Field.

The Eagles struggled to get their offense going as they tallied just two hits with just seven total base runners as IU Kokomo plated four runs on nine hits en route to the 4-0 shutout victory.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 21-19 overall and 10-9 in league play as they wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon eastern time. Senior Day festivities for Midway's eight seniors will take place in between games at Chandler Field.

IU Kokomo – who improved to 27-11 overall and 14-5 in conference play with the win – were on the Eagles from the start. Dalton Clarke ripped the games opening pitch up the middle before later scoring on an RBI single from Noah Darr as the Cougars took the early 1-0 lead.

An RBI single from Austin Weiler in the third and then a two-run double from Weiler in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-0 for the Cougars.

The Midway offense, meanwhile, struggled to get anything going against left-hander, Owen Callaghan. Callaghan took a perfect game into the fourth before a leadoff infield single from Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) broke up the perfect game.

The Eagles didn't get a base runner to third until the sixth inning. Tyrin Orr (Nashville, Tenn.) reached on a leadoff walk before later swiping third. Unfortunately for the Eagles, a strikeout and a fly out ended Midway's scoring opportunity.

Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) and Orr walked in the eighth, but Callaghan stranded the runners as his team held on for the 4-0 victory. The southpaw took home the win allowing just one hit with 12 strikeouts in eight shutout innings.

Gus Garrison (Cynthiana, Ky.) was dealt with the loss allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Garrett Dolinich (Dickson, Tenn.) pitched well in relief scattering two hits in hit 2.2 shutout innings.

Layne Peavler and Francis Mejia (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) accounted for Midway's two hits in the a losing effort.
