Eagles bit by Bulldogs in mid-week loss

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Before jumping back into River States Conference play this weekend, the Midway baseball team traveled to Union (Ky.) for a mid-week tilt at Jerry Carey Stadium in Barbourville, Kentucky.

Union's offense came to play as they scored 15 runs on 14 hits, while Midway tallied five runs on five hits as the Bulldogs cruised to the 15-5 run-rule victory in seven innings.

Midway got the scoring started in the second where Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.) got the Eagles on the board with a sacrifice fly scoring Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) who had reached on a walk to begin the frame.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they wouldn't score again until the fifth inning as the Bulldogs had stormed back taking a 10-1 lead after four innings. Union (21-18) scored one in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth en route to the nine-run cushion.

The Eagles scored two in the fifth on a two-run home run from Jonathan Hook (Tamarac, Fla.), while Kurt Paldino (Overland Park, Kans.) hit his ninth home run of the season on a two-run bomb in the seventh.

Midway, however, didn't have enough fire power to keep up with the Bulldogs as they added one in the fifth and three in the sixth before hitting a walk-off home run in the seventh to seal the 15-5 run-rule victory.

Noah Rodman (Lexington, Ky.) was dealt with the loss for the Eagles allowing 10 runs in 3.2 innings. Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) tossed 1.1 innings allowing one run, while Jacob Cole (Mount Eden, Ky.) surrendered three earned runs in his one inning on the bump.

The Eagles had five hits in the loss with two coming from the pair of home runs from Hook and Paldino. Marion had the other RBI, while Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.), Francis Mejia (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) added one hit apiece.

Midway – who fell to 22-21 overall with the loss – will return to action on Thursday when they host Brescia (Ky.) for a doubleheader at Chandler Field beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Brescia was scheduled to host the series this weekend, but weather has forced the schedule change.
