PIPPA PASSES, Ky. -- Following a bounce back victory over Carlow (Pa.) on Saturday, the Midway University women's basketball team hit the road and headed to Pippa Passes on Tuesday night earning an important River States Conference victory over Alice Lloyd (Ky.).
Trailing by five late in the third quarter, Midway would go on an 11-0 run spanning from the end of the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth as they went on a build a 13-point lead en route to the 75-70 victory.
It was a night to forget for the Midway offense as they finished the night shooting just 32.4 percent from the floor, while Alice Lloyd didn't fare much better at 34.3 percent. Midway did however hit 8-of-31 from three compared to just 4-of-19 for the homestanding Eagles.
Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) and Jill Enix (Pineville, Ky.) knocked down back-to-back threes in the opening minute of the game, while Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) swished home a triple of her own giving Midway the 13-4 lead.
Alice Lloyd – who fell to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in RSC play following the loss – battled back and would eventually take the lead, but a half court heave from Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.) found the bottom of the net as the visitors grabbed the 22-21 lead after one.
Midway – who improved to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in league play with the win – would build their lead back up in the second leading by as many as 10 before taking a 44-42 lead at intermission.
The opening moments of the third stanza were one to forgot as Midway didn't score for the opening 2:19 allowing the home team to build their largest lead of the game. Alice Lloyd opened the third on a quick 7-0 run to take the 49-44 lead.
Leisa Butler (Spring Hill, Tenn.) finally got Midway on the board, but Alice Lloyd continued to hold a five-point advantage. Trailing by five with 3:42 left in the third, Midway made their move before taking the lead for good.
Bailey Foote (Clarksville, Tenn.) kickstarted the run with a reverse layup, while Talley stepped into a three tying the game at 53. Alice Lloyd held a 55-54, but a pair of Tally freebies gave Midway the lead for good. Sierra Graham (Shepherdsville, Ky.) added a trey in the final seconds giving her team a 59-55 lead entering the fourth and final period.
Midway opened the fourth on an 11-2 run getting a three from Callahan, an old-fashioned three-point play from Foote and a layup from Graham as they pushed their lead to its largest of the game at 70-57 with 6:48 remaining.
After scoring 11 points in the opening 3:12 of the fourth, they would be held scoreless for the next five minutes and 16 seconds. In fact, Graham's layup was Midway's final field goal of the contest with 6:48 remaining.
Alice Lloyd took advantage of Midway's offensive woes cutting the deficit to two with 4:01 remaining, but Midway's defense stepped up and held ALC scoreless for the next 3:57.
Over the final 1:32 of regulation, Midway hit 5-of-8 from the charity stripe to seal the 75-70 victory.
Leading the way for Midway was Enix who finished with 15 points. Callahan, meanwhile, notched her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards, while Talley added nine points. Butler, Graham and Yazell chipped in eight points each, while Foote carded seven.
Alan Foster's squad will look to push their win streak to three on Thursday when they host Asbury (Ky.). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
