WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- After having to cancel their weekend series with Judson (Ill.), the Midway University baseball team added games against Sienna Heights (Mich.) and Cumberlands (Ky.) at Doyle-Buhl Stadium in Williamsburg, Ky. on Saturday.
In their first game of the day in a neutral site contest against Sienna Heights, the Eagles scored two runs early and added another late as they held on for the 3-2 victory. Unfortunately, they struggled to get their offense going in game two suffering a 7-1 loss to the 11th ranked Patriots.
Following the doubleheader, Midway moves to 2-8 on the year as they take on No. 25 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Monday (Jan. 17) at 2:30 p.m. ET in Campbellsville.
Midway 3, Sienna Heights 2
Midway got on the board early with single runs in the first and second innings as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two complete. Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Canada) ripped an RBI double in the first before Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.) laced an RBI double in the second.
The 2-0 lead was more than enough for Andy Melgoza who was making the first start of his Midway career. The senior from Oxnard, Calif. got out of a jam in the second when his defense turned a double play, but he finished the contest with five strong innings.
Melgoza gave way to Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) who left two stranded in the sixth inning before his offense added an important insurance run in the sixth after Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) scored on a wild throw when Marquise Glenn (Atlanta, Ga.) singled to first.
The run was an important one after the Saints scored two in the seventh, but Midway held on for the 3-2 victory. Melgoza picked up his first win of the season after allowing one hit in five innings with six strikeouts. Salado, meanwhile, picked up the first save of his career.
No. 11 Cumberlands 7, Midway 1
Midway scored early in their game against Sienna Heights, but in their nightcap, it was Cumberlands who scored early and often. The Patriots scored one in the first, three in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to sprint out to a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles struggled to get any offense going with just one run on two hits. Casey Brown (Louisville, Ky.) had a single in the first, while Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) had an RBI single in the sixth plating Midway's lone run in the loss.
Mark Taylor (Cynthiana, Ky.) was dealt with the loss allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings. Jonathan Hook (Tamarac, Fla.) also tossed three frames allowing one run on two hits.
