Miller drops 30 as Eagles soar to big victory over Falcons

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following an exhibition loss to Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday (Nov. 16) in Owensboro, Ky., the Midway men's basketball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Thursday and hosted Simmons College of Kentucky.

Midway held an eight-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half, but they blitzed the Falcons with a 15-0 run to take a 50-25 lead at intermission as they cruised to the 96-62 victory.

With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad improves to 3-1 as they've now won three straight. The Falcons, meanwhile, drop to 0-8 following the loss.

Helping spark the 15-0 run in the first was the streaky shooting of Donnie Miller who put together his best performance of the season in the win. The sophomore from Newport, Ky. scored a season-high 30 points hitting 12-of-19 overall and 6-of-10 from downtown.

Miller – who played 25 minutes for the Blue and Gold – scored 23 of his 30 in the first half and helped the Eagles double up the Falcons at intermission. The sophomore knocked down 9-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

Three of those triples came on three consecutive trips down the floor as he sparked a 15-0 run with his team holding a 26-18 advantage. Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.) added a pair of layups before Miller capped the run with a breakaway dunk in transition.

Cam Miller (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a pair of buckets and Donovan Morris (Lexington, Ky.) knocked down a trey from the wing as the home team took a 50-25 lead heading into the locker room.

Midway held a comfortable advantage throughout the second half as they pushed their lead to its largest of the game at 75-39 following an 8-0 run.

Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) kickstarted the rally with a layup before adding a breakaway dunk in transition, while Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) added a layup on the baseline drive. Cory Gardner (Owensboro, Ky.) then hit a pullup jumper and extended to 36 as Midway would eventually cruise to the 96-62 victory.

Joining Miller in double figures was Recardo Travis and Cam Miller who scored 10 points apiece in the win. Raekwon Evans, meanwhile, dished out a game-high six assists to go with his six points.

Midway finished the contest shooting 54.7 percent (41-of-75) from the floor, while they hit 10-of-28 from behind the three-point line for 35.7 percent. Simmons, meanwhile, shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three.

The Eagles are now scheduled to open River States Conference play on Saturday (Nov. 20) when they travel to Oakland City (Ind.) to battle the Mighty Oaks. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
