Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a season opening win over Kentucky Christian on Wednesday, the Midway women's basketball team wrapped up their opening week on Saturday when they hosted IU South Bend (Ind.) in Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles trailed by just five after the opening 10 minutes of play, but a five-minute scoring drought to open the second quarter pushed the deficit to 18 as the Titans held on in the second half for the 80-71 victory.
With the loss, Midway drops to 1-1 on the season, while IU South Bend improves to 4-1 on the young season.
The visitors got off to a hot start shooting 50 percent in the first half, while they hit 8-of-15 from behind the arc. Six of those triples came in the opening stanza, as they would take a 23-18 lead into the second quarter.
The Titans soon pushed the lead to a game-high 18 with 4:45 remaining before halftime after opening the quarter on a 13-0 run. During that stretch, the Eagles went cold as they failed to score for well over five minutes.
Midway got within 11 following a pair of jumpers from Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) and a layup from Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.), but it was IU South Bend that took a 43-30 lead at intermission.
The Eagles cut the deficit to 10 with 7:04 left in the third period, but the Titans hit three 3's in the final 2:31 of the quarter to take a 67-50 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Chris Minner's team made one final push after opening the quarter on 17-6 run to get within six with just over two minutes remaining. A pair of freebies from White cut the deficit to five with 1:40 left, but three consecutive layups from the Titans secured the 80-71 victory.
Dezeree White led the charge for the Eagles with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting. White also added six rebounds and five steals to her stat line. Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) added 12 points, six assists and four boards, while Jill Goldey also carded 12 points in the loss.
The Titans finished the contest shooting 49.2 percent overall and 46.4 percent from downtown where they knocked down 13-of-28. Rachel Robards led the way with 28 points hitting 9-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the three-point line.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 9) when they travel to Harrodsburg, Ky. to battle Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.).
