Eagles come up short in overtime at Alice Lloyd

Box Score

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. -- After going a perfect 2-0 in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic over the weekend, the Midway men's basketball team was back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 30) when they battled Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in a River States Conference matchup.

After taking a 34-28 lead into the locker room, the Eagles seemed to be in good shape after holding a 60-46 lead with 8:48 remaining. Alice Lloyd, however, had other plans as they forced overtime after closing regulation on a 22-8 run.

The home team then went on to score the go-ahead bucket with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime as they intercepted Midway's final heave to clinch the 80-78 victory.

With the loss, Joe Krupinski's squad drops to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Alice Lloyd, meanwhile, continues their perfect start to the year moving to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in RSC play.

After leading throughout the second stanza, Midway went on a 13-2 run to extend their lead to its largest of the contest at 60-46 with 8:48 remaining.

Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) scored eight straight points in the rally including back-to-back triples before finding Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) on the left wing who swished home a trey to cap a 9-0 run.

Midway's offense then went cold as they scored just eight points – on two made field goals – over the final 8:48. Alice Lloyd took advantage and slowly chipped away at the deficit before forcing overtime tied at 68.

The overtime was back-and-forth featuring four ties and four lead changes. A 3-pointer from way downtown by Bryce Slone gave Alice Lloyd a 78-76 lead, but a pair of freebies by Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) knotted the game up at 78 with 35 seconds remaining.

Alice Lloyd missed on their first attempt with five seconds remaining, but a weakside offensive rebound and putback by Will Philpot spelled defeat for the Eagles as they fell 80-78.

Three players reached double figures for the Blue and Gold led by Donnie Miller who scored a game-high 27 points. Raekwon Evans chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds, while Recardo Travis finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Alice Lloyd won the rebounding battle 53-42 including a 20-9 edge in offensive rebounds which led to a decisive 24-6 advantage in second change points.

Midway now steps out of conference play on Thursday (Dec. 2) when they travel to Berea (Ky.) to battle the Mountaineers at 7 p.m. ET.
